Tour Overview

The Marangu route, also known as the main route, stands as the most favored path to the summit. Accommodation during the ascent and descent is provided in mountain huts equipped with basic necessities. Typically, the journey encompasses 5 days and 4 nights for the round trip. Alternatively, an extended trek of 6 days and 5 nights can be opted for, incorporating an additional day at Horombo Hut for acclimatization, with the supplementary cost for the extra day listed separately as an option..

Tour Itinerary

    Day 1

    MARANGU GATE TO MANDARA HUT

    After breakfast at your hotel, you will be driven for about one hour to Marangu Gate (1,879m), where we will complete registration and obtain climbing permits. A hot lunch will be provided at the gate before we begin our hike through the lush rainforest. After 3 to 4 hours, we arrive at Mandara Hut (2,720m). In the afternoon, we take a short walk to Maundi Crater, which offers great views of Mawenzi Peak and Northern Tanzania. After returning to the camp, we will have a health check, briefing for the next day, dinner, and rest.

    Day 2

    MANDARA HUT TO HOROMBO HUT

    After breakfast, we begin our ascent. In about one hour, we exit the rainforest and enter the moorland zone, which has unique plants such as giant lobelias and senecios. After 5 to 6 hours, we reach Horombo Hut (3,720m). If we arrive early, we will have time for lunch and acclimatization at Zebra Rocks, followed by an early dinner at 6:30 PM and rest.

    Day 3

    ACCLIMATIZATION DAY AT HOROMBO HUT

    This day is dedicated to acclimatization, which helps improve our chances of reaching the summit. After a late breakfast, we take a short hike (about 2 hours round trip) to Zebra Rocks (4,000m). After returning to Horombo Hut, we will have lunch and relax for the rest of the day. This extra day significantly increases summit success rates.

    Day 4

    HOROMBO HUT TO KIBO HUT

    After an early breakfast, we start the trek through the Alpine Desert, where the air is thinner and temperatures drop. We will pass "The Saddle", a dry, rocky path between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. Upon arrival at Kibo Hut (4,720m), we will have an early lunch and rest. A final briefing and health check will be conducted before we sleep early, as the summit hike starts just before midnight.

    Difficulty:Moderate (challenging due to altitude and wind)

    Day 5

    KIBO HUT TO UHURU PEAK AND DESCENT TO HOROMBO HUT

    We start at midnight for the most challenging part of the trek. The hike to Gilman’s Point (5,681m) takes about 5 hours and is the most demanding section due to steepness and altitude. From there, we continue 1–2 more hours to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa, arriving around sunrise at 6:30 AM. After celebrating and taking photos, we begin the steep descent back to Kibo Hut (3 hours) for a short rest and lunch, followed by another 3-hour descent to Horombo Hut, where we will have dinner and rest.


    Elevation:) 4,720m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak) and back to 3,720m

    Distance:6km to summit, 15km back to Horombo (Total: 21km)

    Hiking Time: 7 hours to the summit, 3 hours back to Kibo, 3 more hours to Horombo (Total: 13 hours)

    Vegetation Zone: Alpine desert

    Difficulty:Very difficult (steep incline, extreme altitude)

    Day 6

    HOROMBO HUT TO MARANGU GATE

    After breakfast, we start our final descent to Marangu Gate (1,879m), arriving around 2 PM. After completing climb certificates and tipping, we drive back to Moshi for a small celebration at the hotel. A company representative will meet you to gather feedback and discuss your departure or other travel plans, such as safaris.
